Potato Corner Responds to the Franchise Controversy Amid Online Backlash

December 18, 2025 Off By Kat

A wave of online outrage has erupted after screenshots circulated on social media alleging questionable franchise practices involving Potato Corner, one of the Philippines’ most recognizable food brands. The controversy began with a viral post claiming that a franchise applicant submitted a detailed proposal only for the exact location to later be used by Potato Corner itself for a company-owned branch.

According to the now-viral post, a friend of the uploader applied for a Potato Corner franchise and provided a comprehensive proposal that included the target market, business justification, and most importantly, the proposed location. After weeks, then months, of waiting with no approval or rejection, the applicant allegedly discovered that Potato Corner had opened its own outlet in the same spot. Netizens were quick to call the move “sketchy,” accusing the company of allegedly benefiting from franchise proposals without granting the franchise itself.

Adding fuel to the issue, another user shared a similar experience involving a long-time franchisee in Parkmall Cebu. The commenter claimed that after years of operating successfully, the franchise renewal was suddenly denied. Shortly after the franchise ended, Potato Corner allegedly opened a company-owned store in the same mall. For many online, this pattern raised serious concerns about fairness, transparency, and the power imbalance between big brands and small entrepreneurs.

Potato Corner Responds

As the issue gained traction, Potato Corner released an official statement addressing the allegations. In their message to the community, the company acknowledged the concerns and emphasized that such incidents do not align with their values, standards, or policies. They reiterated that franchisees are considered partners and that the brand does not intentionally disadvantage entrepreneurs who help grow the business. The company also stated that they had reached out privately to those who raised the concerns and launched an internal investigation to verify the claims.

Despite the statement, reactions remain mixed. Some netizens appreciated the acknowledgment and willingness to investigate, while others criticized the response as vague and damage-control driven. Many pointed out that the issue reflects a broader fear among franchise applicants that large corporations hold all the power and can easily outmaneuver individual investors once valuable market insights are shared.

The controversy has reopened an uncomfortable conversation about franchise ethics in the Philippines. While franchising is often marketed as a safer path to entrepreneurship, these allegations highlight the risks faced by small investors when transparency and accountability are questioned.
