Russian Kids and Adults Protest Against the Roblox Ban in Their Country
December 15, 2025Russia’s decision to block access to the U.S. children’s gaming platform Roblox has triggered an unusual public outcry, with several dozen people including parents and children taking to the streets in the Siberian city of Tomsk to protest the ban.
The country’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, blocked Roblox on December 3, saying the platform was “rife with inappropriate content” that could harm the “spiritual and moral development of children.” Critics also cite alleged extremist materials and content Russia deems illegal under its laws as part of the justification.
In sub‑freezing temperatures, demonstrators held homemade signs saying things like “Hands off Roblox” and “Roblox is the victim of the digital Iron Curtain,” a rare public challenge to state censorship in a country where dissent is tightly controlled.
The ban has sparked debate among Russians especially families about online safety, government censorship, and the lack of homegrown alternatives. Many children and teens dependent on the game for socializing and entertainment see the block as overly restrictive, and some tech‑savvy users have been using VPNs to bypass the restrictions.
While some parents agree with the government’s concern over harmful content, others view the move as part of a broader effort to limit access to Western digital platforms popular with young people, fueling tension between official policy and ordinary families across Russia.
