Teamfight Tactics patch 16.1 Launches “Lore & Legends” Arrives
December 4, 2025 Off By DebOn December 3, 2025, TFT officially launches Patch 16.1, ushering in the highly anticipated Lore & Legends set — described by developers as “the biggest set we’ve ever done.” The update goes live simultaneously on PC and mobile, giving all players access to the new champions, mechanics, and content.
According to the game’s creative team, Lore & Legends aims to blend deep lore from across the world of Runeterra with TFT’s signature tactical gameplay — delivering nostalgia, strategy, and variety for both longtime players and newcomers.
What’s New: Champions, Unlockables & Mechanics
100 Champions — including 40 “Unlockables”
Lore & Legends dramatically expands the TFT roster: 100 champions in total. Of those, 60 are base champions available to all players from the start; the remaining 40 are “Unlockable” — unlockable by fulfilling certain in-game conditions or achievements.
These unlockable champions are not simply cosmetic: once unlocked, they join the shared pool and can appear in shops during drafts. Their unit-pool size is equivalent to normal champions of the same cost/tier — but access is gated per player. The game also introduces an in-game tracker called “Lorefinder” so players can keep track of which champions they’ve unlocked.
Core Gameplay Changes & Balance Tweaks
Patch 16.1 does more than add champions — it adjusts many of TFT’s core systems to better suit the new set environment.
- Experience (XP) & Leveling Adjustments: Reaching Level 8 now requires more XP (48 ⇒ 60), making early-game leveling slower; but leveling from 8→9 and 9→10 now requires less XP (76 ⇒ 68 and 84 ⇒ 68 respectively), which supports faster access to late-game units.
- Shop Odds Reworked: The rates for 4-cost and 5-cost champions at high levels (8 and 9) have been adjusted, making high-cost compositions more viable in late game.
- Carousel & Item-Drop Changes: The odds of obtaining Spatulas and Pans — key for building certain item combos — have been increased during carousels in early/mid rounds, improving flexibility for creative builds.
- Player Damage & Stage Scaling Adjusted: To make mid-game tempo and decisions more meaningful (especially with powerful units now available), TFT increased baseline “player damage” in Stage 3 (from 5 to 6) and slightly reduced Stage 4 base damage (8 → 7).
Additionally, movement speed when units transition between hexes has been improved to reduce stutter and make targeting smoother — small polish, but especially helpful in hectic late-game fights.
Returning and Revamped Systems: Augments, Roles & More
Patch 16.1 also brings back many fan-favorite augments — some reworked to fit the new environment — and reintroduces certain gameplay features:
- The “Unlockables” mechanic (with the 40 additional champions) is a central new feature, giving players a sense of progression beyond just ranked or battle-pass.
- Several classic augments return (e.g. “Celestial Blessing,” “Band of Thieves,” “Binary Airdrop,” among others), though some have been rebalanced to fit the updated XP and shop/trait systems.
- The role of Assassins returns, with revised mechanics: Assassins now take 15% less damage from all enemies except their current target — making them more viable again in certain compositions.
- Opening-encounter options have changed: for example, the “Wandering Trainer” option is replaced by new alternatives (like “Emblem Ensemble”), which affects early-game decisions and strategic flexibility.
New Ranked Season & Player Incentives
With the new set live, TFT resets ranked ladders for both Standard and Double-Up modes. Players will be placed somewhere between Iron II and Silver IV, depending on their previous rank.
To ease players into the reset, the first five provisional matches won’t penalize bottom-four finishes; on the flip side, finishing in the top four grants bonus LP — offering a buffer while the meta reshapes around the new set.
For mobile players, opting in to push-notification updates gives small rewards, like Treasure Tokens or emotes — a nice incentive for those who follow updates closely.
