The God Slayer: Elements Meet Steampunk in a Dark, Eastern-Inspired Open-World RPG

The God Slayer is an open world Action RPG being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, by Chinese developer Pathea Games, known for the “My Time at” series of farming sims. It’s a radical departure from their other games, and Pathea Games hopes to use their skills in creating open world RPGs with distinct systems and great characters to a much darker setting. The God Slayer thrusts players into an Eastern-inspired steampunk metropolis: the sprawling capital of the Zhou Kingdom, where smog-choked factories, airships, steam-powered vehicles and monorails paint a world shaped by industry and divine oppression.

In The God Slayer, the world was created by the Celestials to fuel Qi, the energy they used for their eternal lives. Humanity eventually learns how to use Qi through martial arts, allowing them to manipulate the elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, and Metal. The Celestials, furious that their divine energy was being used by mere mortals, attacked humanity in an event known as Godfall, where they attacked the Zhou Kingdom, the strongest in the land. The king and much of the Elemancers were eliminated, the land was devastated by the Celestials’ attack, and humanity became oppressed by the Celestials.

The game follows Cheng, the only survivor from his family, who were all killed by Celestials during Godfall. With the help of the Star Fall Society, a group with several Elemancers led by the wise and enigmatic “Master”, he seeks to avenge his family and take back humanity’s freedom from the Celestials.

As an Elemancer, he must learn new techniques from scrolls and masters to help him achieve greater control of his Qi, and of course, defeat Celestials.

The elements in this game all have dynamic interactions with each other and the environment: e.g. fire burns wood, water extinguishes fire, steam arises from boiling water, earth can obstruct enemies. The God Slayer evokes a feeling similar to the bending-based fantasy of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

In the gritty steampunk world of the Zhou kingdom lies a society layered with social inequality, political intrigue, and class divides: elegant steam-heated mansions of the elite contrast sharply with soot-blackened slums where factory workers toil under harsh conditions. There are several factions that you must interact with in your quest to fight the Celestials, and you must be careful that your actions do not instead spell disaster for everyone you hold dear.

The God Slayer aims to combine Eastern mythic fantasy, martial arts, elemental powers, and a Western inspired Steampunk setting with an open world and RPG gameplay, where players catalysts of change in an into a world of rebellion, vengeance, and hope.
