For nearly a decade, the character Ciri has been portrayed on-screen by Freya Allan a journey she now admits nearly ended when her co-star Henry Cavill, who played Geralt of Rivia, announced his departure from The Witcher. In a candid recent interview, Allan revealed how deeply that shock resonated with her and nearly led her to abandon the series altogether.

A Bond Beyond the Screen

Allan described Cavill’s Geralt as more than just a costar he was, in a sense, the “adoptive father” to her on-screen persona. The abrupt announcement of his exit from the show hit her hard. “Season 3 was a really difficult season for everyone,” she said. “I cried because I wanted to finish the show with the guy that played my adoptive father.” For Allan, Cavill wasn’t just any leading man “he’s the Geralt I grew up with.”

What made the news even harder to swallow was how blindsiding it was for many on set. According to Allan, she found out about Cavill leaving just a day before fans heard the news.

In the wake of Cavill’s exit, the thought of leaving the show crossed Allan’s mind seriously. But ultimately, she decided against it, choosing instead to stay and carry forward the journey of Ciri. Once she made that painful but determined decision, she committed herself fully. “Once I made that choice, I made the most of every moment.”

Her resolve wasn’t just about staying loyal to a character it was also about continuing the legacy of what Cavill stood for in the series. Known for his strong dedication to remaining faithful to the source material, Cavill often championed the original novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. Inspired by that same commitment, Allan says she now sees it as her responsibility to uphold that standard. “I really want to give fans what they want,” she explained, adding that Cavill’s devotion to the books motivated her to take up that mantle.

As it stands, the show has adapted with a new actor Liam Hemsworth taking over Geralt’s role for season 4 (and beyond). Despite the cast shake-up and all the emotions behind the scenes, Allan’s decision to remain lends some continuity to the series, centering the story around Ciri’s evolving arc.
