A 17-year-old Japanese idol Azu Fujisaki has been dropped from her group after a photo she shared sparked suspicion that she might be dating.

The photo, posted on November 1 on social media, showed Fujisaki holding popcorn and a cup of Coke at a movie theater. What seemed like an innocent outing triggered controversy when fans noticed a man’s reflection on the plastic cap of the drink leading to speculation she was out with a boyfriend.

Shortly afterward, her account was deleted. Reports say she issued an apology before the removal, expressing regret to fans, her fellow group members, and those involved with the agency.

Three days later, on November 4, her management officially announced her expulsion from Heroines Research Students, the group she belonged to. The stated reason was a “serious violation of rules.” The agency didn’t detail which rule was breached, but many believe she broke the group’s implicit “no-dating” policy a common but often unwritten standard for idols.

Critics and fans have debated the fairness of the dismissal. Some argue that expecting idols especially minors to suppress personal relationships is overly restrictive and unfair, while others say such rules are part of the agreement when joining idol groups.

This incident has sparked renewed discussion about the strict restrictions placed on young idols in Japan, especially those in smaller or “underground” groups, who often rely on a devoted fanbase for support. Many wonder whether these rules, particularly around personal relationships, remain justifiable in modern times.
