Luminaris, a company that operates physical tutoring centers like “Kobetsu Shidou Wit” in Tokyo areas such as Sumida ward, has announced an expansion into virtual education with Virtual Cram School Wish High. According to ITMedia News, they already operated these services for junior high schools and businesses, but now this virtual teacher system is now open to individuals as well.

This is a translated statement of why Lunamaris established this service:

“While online education has become widespread, challenges like students unable to stick with video lessons or getting left behind without understanding have come to light. By combining the flexibility unique to online learning with the immersive lessons from VTuber instructors, we aim to provide an environment where learning can continue sustainably.”

For the uninitiated, cram schools (juku) drill subjects like math and history to prepare for brutal entrance exams. This virtual school targets rural students and those with school absensces, promising alleviation from online learning boredom. While high school stundents are the target, there are on age limits, so both junior high and adult students can enrol. The school rollsout on February 2026, and classes start on March 1. Tuition is ¥9,900 (around $65 USD) per course monthly, with lessons available as archive videos for replay.

All teachers are currently active VTubers. Ako Shuna is in charge of geography, Suzuno is in charge of Japanese history, and Wanokura Michiru is in charge of chemistry. On the 19th of February, these teachers will host a livestream answering the question, “What kind of people are the teachers?”

On the 25th, world history teacher Utsunomiya Sian, classical Japanese teacher Yorozu Hagiba, and English teacher Narito Mizuki/Meido Mizuki are scheduled to do a similar themed stream. Rounding out the roster is Rengetsu Umi, Wish High’s math teacher, and Genkyu Kome, Wish High’s physics teacher. The website teases that a Biology teacher is to follow.

Wish High represents Japan’s latest innovation to the VTuber concept. Allowing for more charismatic characters to teach students and could make high-stakes learning not just effective, but actually fun. This could be the start of a new type of exam prep for a digital-native generation.
